Too Close...

Last night, I was on the phone ordering pizza. As most of you moms know, a phone in the hand = a crying kid somewhere in the house... I think it's a law in some physics book somewhere. Of course last night was no different, and when Taron started his usual wail I hurried and shut myself in my room so I could hear the pizza guy ask me "will there be anything else with that?"

When I came out, I asked what was wrong and he said something about Cody (our puppy -- not so puppy-sized anymore) going upstairs and then Solei's bird (Duke) squacking up a storm and then Cody came down the stairs wagging his tail.
Knowing the bird was safe in a cage, I told Taron not to worry about it, dogs can't open cages. Still he kept freaking out, but was too afraid to go check on the bird, so I told Caden to go check and reassure Taron. A few minutes later I hear a distaught wail upstairs "Dukes gone! He's not in his cage!" My heart shifts into overdrive and I run up the stairs faster than I have in a long time..

Sure enough, the bird is not in his cage and the door is open. I look up hopefully at all his regular perches... nothing. My mind is racing, if he is not up somewhere high, he is within the dog's reach... not good. I hear Taron say, "Hey, I just heard him squeak!" Ihadn't heard anything, it was probably just the door or something. Suddenly someone yells "There he is!" and I follow the pointing finger to the little cockatiel on the floor behind the door. Something doesn't look quite right, there are feathers around him and he looks a little mangled. Solei is now crying and distraught as I run over and pick him up gently, half expecting a stiff bird. He moves. I can breathe again. But is he broken? He seems to be in a sort of daze -- in shock -- but after I hold him for a minute, he takes off and flies to his cage. He's OK.

I don't know what went on up there, but something tells me we had a pretty close call. And with the way this dog will eat anything (even a bar of soap), I say we just experienced a miracle.

One good thing came out of this -- I now have the kids on my side for the argument that the dog only belongs downstairs...

Ski School

We've been skiing a lot the last few days... Maybe too much? Nah, not possible... Especially when the mercury is at 32 degrees...

On Thursday night, Caden joined in his ski lessons and Sierra met up with some friends. It was our anniversary that night but Chris was working so he couldn't come (I teased him that I had to ride the lift up with some other guy on our anniversary). He made it up to me by buying me chocolates and taking me to Olive Garden (yeah, he knows the way to my heart is through my taste buds).

Friday I took Ella to the bunny hill during the day when the kids were at school. Taron came home at lunch time and, of course, he wanted to go too. So we did. Chester Bowl isn't open during the day, so it was just the 3 of us on the bunny hill, and I was their chairlift... it was a good workout.

Then on Saturday I went by myself for a few runs in the morning (a rare treat). The sun was shining and the snow was the perfect condition for kids to learn on, so I came home to get some. I think they were feeling a bit skied out, because they wanted to shovel the melting ice off the driveway more than they wanted to go skiing at first...

But that got old after a while and they decided skiing sounded more fun after all... well, all except for the older girls who decided the mall would be more fun...
.
So Chris drove the girls to the mall while I took the little ones to the slopes (well, slope, actually -- there's only one lift at Chester).
.
It seems like every time we go to Chester, the kids meet up with friends from school, and this time Taron's friend Grant was there learning on the bunny slope too. His dad was so nice to push them both up together, although I was worried he was going to give himself a heart attack, it's not easy pushing one up, much less two. Taron and Grant had fun racing down together and I think it helped them both try harder.
.
After shoveling out a whopping $4 (yes, I'm being facetious) on lunch for the 4 of us, we went back out and there was Chris, handsome in his new ski coat, ready to take Ella up for her first chairlift ride (well, actually, she did ride one in the summer for the alpine slide, but that's different)...

It was a fun day, lots of learning was done...

And at the end of the day, the kids had a few tricks to show off...

15 Years...

15 years ago today our family started. It's been a good run, lots of ups and downs, lots of work, and lots of kids, but it's been amazing. I couldn't have asked for a better man!

Hmm...

A few days ago I was in the shower, shaving my legs when I thought to myself, "Why am I doing this?" Then I started thinking...

"Things you can get away with in Minnesota..."

Not shaving your legs...nobody will ever know underneath those thermals...

Disheveled hair...just throw on a ski cap and you'll fit right in...

Doorbell ditching... gloves don't leave fingerprints...

Putting on a few pounds...seven layers make you look fat anyways...

Hickeys...scarfs are in style right now...

Ugly feet... One word -- Boots...

Yeah, but lest ye think we have it made here, there is one thing you can NOT get away with...

Leaving the house without wearing so many dang clothes!

Not Many Places You Can Do This Down Your Street...

In winter, everyone puts away the strollers and pulls out the sleds, Welcome to Minnesota!

Ski Day

Thursday afternoon I thought I'd take Ella to the little ski hill a few miles from here and let her try out her new skis (rentals actually). She thought it would be great fun...
But after a few tries wasn't so sure...

And soon she was done...

The rest of us went later that day and Caden really enjoyed the ski class so he will be going every Thursday from now on, not a bad way to spend a Thursday afternoon I suppose...
.

On a side note, I just have to rave a little here about Duluth... I love this community! People create such fun venues, like the ice rinks, nature center, and Bentleyville lights, and it's all run on volunteerism... which makes it more friendly and less expensive...season passes for the family at Chester Bowl are only $80 (if you put in 6 hours of volunteer time), the ski classes are free, and a plate of mac n cheese at the concessions stand will run you a whole whoppin' 75 cents... if you have ever skied before, you know that it usually would cost you $80 for one day, more for lessons, and you'll probably spend another $15 each on food if you eat there... taking a family of 7 would pretty much break the bank! But at Chester, it costs next to nothing... Sure, it's not Park City, but for the price, I'll take it! You know I love a good deal...

1,461 Days of Ella

From this... To this...

What would the last 4 years have been like without our Ella? I just can't imagine. She has been such a joy to our family; her eager smile, squishy hugs and abundant kisses brighten every day.
Happy 4th Birthday Skoochy Girl!
